The Seven C's of Success

by Brian Tracy

After having studied top achievers and peak performers over the past 25 years, I've concluded that these unique men and women have, in most cases, mastered what I call the Seven C's of Success.

Clarity - Eighty percent of success comes from being clear on who you are, what you believe in and what you want.

Competence - You can't climb to the next rung on the ladder until you are excellent at what you do now.

Constraints - Eighty percent of all obstacles to success come from within. Find out what is constraining in you or your company and deal with it.

Concentration - The ability to focus on one thing single-mindedly and see it through until it's done takes more character than anything else.

Creativity - Flood your life with ideas from many sources. Creativity needs to be exercised like a muscle, if you don't use it you'll lose it.

Courage - Most in demand and least in supply, courage is the willingness to do the things you know are right.

Continuous learning -“ Read, at the very least, one book a week on business to keep you miles ahead of the competition. And just as you eat and bathe, organize your time so you spend 30 minutes a day exploring e-mail, sending messages, going through web sites, because like exercise, it's the only way you can keep on top of technology. If you get away from it, you'll lose your edge.

Hi Jackie. Those 7 C's posted by Brian Tracy are all helpful things to consider, but aren't the utterly comprehensive framework I think we need for success in anything we do. I first started talking about "The 7 Cs of Success" (notice, no apostrophe, because no possession or contraction is indicated) in the late 80s and first wrote a book on them published in 1994, True Success: A New Philosophy of Excellence (Putnam/Berkeley). A further development was made in The Art of Achievement (Andrews McMeel). In case you'd find them interesting, I'll list them here for you. My third condition encompasses developing the competence and using whatever creativity is required. These conditions are meant to be universal - utterly comprehensive - and logically connected to the attainment of any particular goal.

The 7 Cs of Success
For True Success, we need:

1. A clear CONCEPTION of what we want, a vivid vision, a goal clearly imagined.

2. A strong CONFIDENCE that we can attain the goal.

3. A focused CONCENTRATION on what it will take to reach that goal.

4. A stubborn CONSISTENCY in pursuing our vision.

5. An emotional COMMITMENT to the importance of what we're doing.

6. A good CHARACTER to guide us and keep us on a proper course.

7. A CAPACITY TO ENJOY the process along the way.

Every one of Brian's conditions is either identical to one of these, or amounts to the application of one of these in specific conditions, or, while good advice generally, isn't a universal condition for goal attainment of any specific sort.

My framework has been extracted from the thoughts of the great philosophers in history, the master diagnosticians of the human condition. I first got inklings of such practical wisdom in my graduate work at Yale, and then during my 15 year stint as a professor of philosophy at Notre Dame, really began to research this and develop the ideas.

I hope you find the framework helpful!!!!!!!!!
